How old were you when you started and where did your idea come from?
Miss K started her business at age 10. She wants to work in a bakery when she grows up and thought that making salts would be a good way to learn about making foods for sale.
What was the biggest mistake you made and what did you learn from it?
Our biggest challenge has been understanding supply and demand. Last summer people really liked the Garlic Scape Infused Salt, so we made a lot this summer. But people aren't as interested in that blend this summer. She's changing the way she thinks about selling this salt by packaging it in smaller portions for holiday gift sets.
What are your future plans for the business?
Miss K's goals include purchasing her own equipment so that she can make salts that people with food allergies can use. She also wants to help others with her business and gives back with donations to charities that help people with disabilities.
Any advice for other girls starting a business?
Don't let your own challenges get in the way of doing something you love. Miss K is autistic and struggles with a lot of things that most people take for granted. But with patience and a lot of hard work, her salt making is helping her to achieve her dream of working in the food service industry.
