How old were you when you started and where did your idea come from?
I initially wrote a book called, The Rules of a Big Boss: A Book of Self-love. My Dad and I published it on June 25, 2020. I told him that I wanted to be a fashion designer and have my own clothing line one day. He said, “It’s never too early to fulfill a dream so why not now? I mean you can start a clothing line and business that’s centered around your book. You can then use your clothing to market your books and vice versa. Is that something that you want to do?” I said, “sure why not.” I started designing products while he filed the articles of incorporation and trademarks. My business became officially licensed on September 9, 2020. Here I was 12 years old, and I was a published author, style influencer, motivational speaker, brand, and small black owned small business (Hair flip).
What was the biggest mistake you made and what did you learn from it?
I should have filed for the trademarks before designing my products because you have to pay more to trademark your products when they’re already on market.
Any advice for other girls starting a business?
Make sure that you truly want it, make a plan, don’t be afraid to fail, and revise the plan as needed.
